Alex-
While you plot line reflects the action in the story, the attention to detail takes away from your writing. Sentences begin with capital letters and end with periods. Check spelling, punctuation, etc. With a bit more care, you can catch these errors yourself.

Also, while you are caught up with 1st quarter chapter summaries, you should have finished the chapters through 16. You are behind for 2nd quarter already. If you need to use recess to get caught up, please stay in.

Assignment #2 Due October 22
  • Put a line above Assignment #1; assignment #2 will go above assignment #1.
  • Read chapter two.
  • Choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • With your small group, find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Each member of your group must write on his or her WIKI page the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • Then, in a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Read chapter three for Monday, October 25.
Foreshadowing

pg. 31- " One little indian boy left all alone;
He went and hanged himself and then there were none."

This is foreshadowing because the last line states and then there were none and that is the name of the book. There are ten guests who are staying indian and in the poem there are little Indian boys. These ten phrases of the poem will decide what happens to each of the guests, which foreshadows the fate of the ten guests.

Pg. 36- " funny the way they eyed eachother--as though they knew ." - Mr. Blore

This foreshadows the rest of the book Mr. Blore is indicating that he knows something the other guests do not. Also in chapter one and some other occasions in chapter two, Mr. Blore hints the reader that he knows terrible is going to happen.

Pg. 36- "Queer buisness when you came to think of it--the whole thing was queer--very queer...." Mr. Fred Narracott

This foreshadows that something is not right about the group. Even Fred Narracott the boat transporter could realize that there was something off with the group, when he had not even talked with them.

True - he sees what an odd mix of people they are!

Pg. 32- "Drowned...found drowned...Drowned at sea...drowned-drowned-drowned...No, she would not think of it." Ver Claythorne

This is foreshadowing because it indicates that Vera might have been drowning in her past. This might effect her fate in the story because on of the lines in the poem is about going out to sea.

Some good choices for examples of foreshadowing...good job!

  • how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?

  • how might the title be a clue to the story?

A narrative is just a story, but a mystery is a suspensful mysterious story. A mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end when it finally makes sense, a narrative doesn't have to have any suspense, it can just be a straightforward story.Almost all mystery novels are books that are impossible to put down because it is filled with so much perplexity. Just when you think you have finally figured it out, the plot thickens.
The title might be a clue to the story because I think it means that everybody will die. Maybe Mr. Owen is a serial killer and invited them all to to the island to kill them without police getting involved. It could also turn into a game like in The Hunger Games, but it is unlikely. If I had to choose on I would guess that Mr. Owen is a serial killer.

I predict that everybody on the island will die either because of starvation or natural disasters, or that there is a killer on the island and kills them all.

Alex-
You're exactly right. If a mystery is successful, the plot thickens along the way. Good predictions, too.
